The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has condemned recent attacks on schools, teachers, and students in different parts of Nigeria.

The union described the incidents as barbaric, inhuman, and dangerous to the future of education in the country.

It also warned that teachers could withdraw their services if authorities fail to stop the growing insecurity around schools.

In a statement signed by NUT National President, Audu Amba, and Secretary General, Clinton Ikpitibo, the union said schools should remain safe places for learning.

However, it noted that armed bandits and terrorists now target educational institutions across the country.

According to the union, the attacks have created fear, panic, and emotional trauma among teachers, students, parents, and local communities.

The statement followed attacks on several schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026.

The affected schools include Local Authority Primary School, Ahoro-Esinele, Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota.

The union said gunmen abducted a school principal, seven teachers, and more than 30 pupils and students during the attacks.

In addition, one teacher was reportedly shot dead.

The NUT described the killing of the teacher as deeply painful, noted that the victim wore his union attire when attackers killed him.

According to the union, the deceased remained committed to education and the teaching profession until his death.

The NUT also expressed concern over reports that one of the abducted teachers was later beheaded by the attackers.

The union further revealed that armed bandits abducted more than 40 pupils and students from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on the same day.

The development, according to the NUT, shows the growing threat facing schools across Nigeria.

The union called on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and secure the release of all abducted victims.

It also urged the Federal Government and affected state governments to strengthen security around schools.

According to the NUT, authorities must adopt proactive measures to prevent future attacks.

The union warned that continuous attacks on schools could damage Nigeria’s education system and endanger the future of children nationwide.

“Teachers cannot effectively discharge their duties in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity,” the statement said.

The NUT stressed that fear, kidnappings, and killings make learning difficult for both teachers and students, warned that teachers may withdraw their services if attacks continue without decisive government action and also urged authorities at all levels to act urgently to protect schools, teachers, learners, and host communities.
