IGP Disu Warns Against Misuse of Police Videos

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has cautioned Nigerians against the misuse of police-related videos and contents, warning that the indiscriminate circulation of manipulated or misleading recordings could damage officers’ morale, erode public trust and undermine security operations.

Disu gave the warning during an interactive session with members of the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria in Abuja, where he reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to accountability, transparency, professionalism and respect for human rights.

The police chief stressed that while public scrutiny of law enforcement activities remains important, such oversight must be balanced with an understanding of the realities officers face in carrying out their duties.

According to him, policing has become increasingly challenging as society evolves, particularly with the rapid advancement of technology, noting that officers often work under difficult and high-risk conditions to ensure the safety of citizens.

Disu warned against the circulation of outdated, manipulated or misleading videos involving police personnel, describing such actions as harmful to public trust, national security and community stability.

He revealed that the Federal Capital Territory Police Command lost about 140 officers last year due to violent attacks, accidents and other duty-related incidents.

The IGP reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, assuring Nigerians that officers found guilty of wrongdoing would continue to face disciplinary measures.

At the same time, he stressed that officers carrying out lawful duties must be protected from harassment, misinformation and false narratives capable of undermining their work.

Disu also pledged sustained engagement with the media, describing journalists as critical partners in the fight against insecurity and urging continued collaboration to promote accurate and responsible security reporting.
