The Africa Make Big Polluters Pay (MBPP) Coalition has marked Earth Day 2026 with a strong call for climate justice across Africa.
The group condemned major polluters and demanded an immediate end to new fossil fuel expansion on the continent.
In a statement, MBPP said Earth Day should move beyond symbolism and push real action against companies driving environmental destruction. It warned that Africa continues to suffer the worst impacts of climate change despite contributing the least to global emissions.
The coalition said communities across Africa are already facing rising temperatures, flooding, drought, and displacement linked to climate change. It added that ecosystems from forests to wetlands are under growing pressure.
MBPP also called for accountability from major oil companies operating in Africa, including Shell, Chevron, and ExxonMobil. It insisted that polluters must pay for environmental damage and stop expanding fossil fuel projects.
The group rejected what it described as “false climate solutions,” including carbon markets and offsets, arguing they allow continued pollution while shifting harm to developing countries.
It further urged African governments to prioritise renewable energy, community-led solutions, and a structured phase-out of fossil fuels.
MBPP said Earth Day 2026 should mark a shift from statements to action, with stronger global accountability and climate justice for affected communities.
