At least 12 people have died and 14 others sustained injuries in a road accident along the Benin–Auchi–Lokoja Road in Edo State.
The crash occurred on Wednesday at Egono, near Ewu, when a truck carrying passengers and goods lost control and overturned.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the vehicle was speeding before the driver attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre. The driver reportedly lost control, causing the truck to veer off the road.
FRSC officials confirmed that about 37 passengers were on board the vehicle at the time of the crash. Twelve people died at the scene, while 14 others were injured. Some passengers escaped without injuries.
Authorities attributed the crash to dangerous overtaking and excessive speed.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and evacuated the injured victims for medical treatment.
The FRSC spokesperson in Edo State, Patricia Onwochei, confirmed that one of the deceased has already been buried. She added that the remaining bodies have been deposited at the mortuary of St. Lazarus Hospital.
Authorities say investigations are still ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
Road safety officials have again urged drivers to avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking, warning that such actions continue to cause preventable deaths on Nigerian highways.
