Lagos State has vowed to continue removing illegal structures and shanties along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The government said the exercise will improve safety, prevent flooding, and protect public infrastructure.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said enforcement teams have worked along the expressway for the past three weeks. During the operation, officials removed illegal buildings, roadside shanties, and other structures built on public land.

Wahab said the exercise would continue until all illegal structures were cleared. He added that monitoring teams would remain on the ground to stop people from returning to the affected areas.

The commissioner urged residents, traders, and transport operators to stop using road setbacks and drainage channels for business or housing. He said such activities block drainage systems, increase flooding, and slow traffic.

Wahab warned that anyone who rebuilds a demolished structure or occupies public land without approval will face arrest and prosecution. He stressed that the state would continue to enforce environmental laws.

The Lagos State Government said the operation is part of its urban renewal programme. It aims to create a cleaner, safer, and more organised environment for residents.

Officials believe the exercise will improve sanitation, reduce flooding, and protect roads and other public facilities. They also expect it to ease traffic congestion along the busy expressway.

The government appealed to residents to obey environmental laws and use only approved locations for their businesses. It said public support remains important to keeping Lagos clean, safe, and orderly.
