AC Milan Sack Allegri After Champions League Miss
AC Milan have sacked head coach Massimiliano Allegri after the club failed to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The Serie A giants confirmed the decision on Monday following a disappointing end to the campaign.
Milan lost 2-1 at home to Cagliari on the final day of the season. The defeat pushed them out of the top four.
Poor Finish Costs Milan
Milan spent most of the season in the top two and looked set to challenge for the league title.
However, the team struggled in the closing weeks of the campaign. They won only one of their last five league matches. The poor run included three defeats and one draw.
Como secured the final Champions League spot after beating Cremonese.
Club owners RedBird Capital described the season as a major disappointment.
“For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A,” the club said in a statement.
“The final stretch was completely inconsistent. The last defeat turned the season into an unequivocal failure.”
Major Changes at the Club
Milan also announced the departure of several senior officials.
CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare and technical director Geoffrey Moncada have all left the club.
The club said it plans to reorganise its football operations before the new season begins.
Allegri returned to Milan last year for his second spell at the club. The 58-year-old previously managed the Rossoneri before leaving in 2014.
Former striker Zlatan Ibrahimović will remain in his advisory role despite criticism from supporters during the season.
Focus Turns to New Manager
Milan will play in the UEFA Europa League next season after missing out on the Champions League.
The new Serie A season starts on August 22 and 23.
Italian media reports have linked former Napoli coach Antonio Conte and Atalanta boss Raffaele Palladino with the vacant managerial job at Milan.
