Injury confirmed after MLS clash
Lionel Messi faces a fitness concern just weeks before the World Cup. Inter Miami confirmed he has muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.
The issue happened during a 6-4 win over Philadelphia Union on Sunday. Messi left the pitch in the 73rd minute.
He grabbed the back of his left leg before asking to be substituted. He walked off without help.
Medical update from Inter Miami
Inter Miami released a medical statement on Monday. Tests showed an overload linked to muscle fatigue.
The club said:
“After further medical tests, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.”
They added that no recovery timeline is set. They said return depends on his progress.
World Cup preparation in doubt
The update comes at a bad time for Argentina. The World Cup starts on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Argentina national football team begin their campaign five days later. They face Algeria national football team in Kansas City.
Careful workload management
Messi has played under a reduced schedule since joining Inter Miami in 2023. The club has rested him during busy periods.
MLS is now on a break for World Cup preparations. This gives Messi more recovery time.
Squad and friendlies ahead
Argentina will announce their squad next week. Messi has not confirmed his participation yet.
He is still expected to play in what could be his sixth World Cup.
Argentina will also play warm-up games. They face Honduras national football team on June 6. They then meet Iceland national football team on June 9.
