Football remains the world’s most popular sport, according to a new global sports analysis that ranked sports based on fan base, participation, and worldwide viewership.
The report estimated football’s global following at between 3.5 and 4 billion people, placing it far ahead of every other sport. Analysts linked the sport’s dominance to its simple rules, global accessibility, and major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup.
The World Cup continues to attract some of the largest television audiences in sports history. In addition, football maintains a presence in more than 200 countries, making it the most widely played and watched sport globally.
Cricket ranked second with more than 2.5 billion fans worldwide. The sport remains especially popular in countries such as India, Pakistan, England, Australia, and South Africa. Leagues like the Indian Premier League have also increased cricket’s international appeal.
Basketball followed in third place with up to 2.4 billion followers. The NBA’s global reach, social media presence, and international stars have helped the sport grow rapidly across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Meanwhile, hockey secured fourth place after combining audiences from both field hockey and ice hockey. Tennis completed the top five, driven by global tournaments such as Wimbledon and the US Open.
The report also listed volleyball, table tennis, baseball, golf, and American football among the world’s biggest sports.
Overall, the ranking showed how sports continue to shape entertainment, culture, and business across different regions of the world.
