In a move to strengthening its long-standing partnership with Africa’s largest economy, the United Kingdom, UK, has appointed Vicky Seymour as its new Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria as both countries plan to deepen cooperation in trade, security, migration, development, and people-to-people relations.
The British High Commission announced the appointment in Abuja on Thursday as Seymour assumed duty in the Nigerian capital. She succeeds Gill Lever OBE, whose diplomatic posting ended in June 2026.
The Vicky Seymour Nigeria appointment comes at a time when the United Kingdom and Nigeria continue to expand cooperation in several strategic sectors. Officials from both countries have worked together on economic growth, security, education, governance, and investment. The new deputy high commissioner will help build on those efforts.
Before taking up her new position, Seymour served as Head of the East Africa Department at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). She held that role from 2023. Earlier in her career, she led the FCDO’s Trade Diplomacy Department and served as Development Director in Mozambique.
Seymour brings more than 20 years of diplomatic and public service experience to her new role. She has worked in several African countries, including Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mozambique. She also served in Afghanistan, where she gained experience in international development and security.
Throughout her career, Seymour has focused on climate issues, economic development, security, and international cooperation. Before joining the diplomatic service, she worked in the non-profit sector, where she concentrated on migration and humanitarian issues.
Speaking after her appointment, Seymour expressed her excitement about serving in Nigeria. She said she looked forward to meeting people from across the country’s diverse communities and strengthening the already strong relationship between both nations.
She also said she hopes to create more opportunities for collaboration between the United Kingdom and Nigeria. According to her, stronger connections between citizens, businesses, and institutions will benefit both countries in the years ahead.
The British High Commission said Seymour will play an important role in advancing the UK’s engagement with Nigeria. Her responsibilities will include supporting economic growth, promoting development cooperation, strengthening security partnerships, improving migration cooperation, and expanding international collaboration.
Nigeria and the United Kingdom have maintained strong diplomatic and economic ties for many years. Both countries continue to work together on trade, education, investment, health, and regional security. With the Vicky Seymour Nigeria appointment, the UK aims to deepen that partnership and create new opportunities for cooperation across sectors that matter to both nations.
