The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned its Federal Capital Territory personnel against misusing firearms and abusing their authority.

FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu gave the warning during a psychological evaluation and fitness exercise for armed personnel in Abuja.

He urged officers to respect citizens’ rights and maintain professional standards. He also warned that the command would discipline anyone who violates its rules.

The Command organised the exercise through its Forensic Investigation and Psychological Service Unit.

The programme aims to assess the mental fitness of armed personnel and improve their conduct during security operations.

Odumosu urged officers to take the evaluation seriously. He also encouraged personnel facing psychological challenges to seek professional help.

He stressed that officers must demonstrate discipline, patience and restraint. They must also remain calm during confrontations and provocations.

Odumosu also expressed concern over an alleged shooting incident involving an NSCDC operative at Kubwa Market in Abuja.

The incident occurred on October 25, 2026, during a reported confrontation with traders.

The development attracted public criticism and raised concerns about the conduct of security personnel.

Following the incident, the NSCDC suspended the officer and commenced internal disciplinary proceedings.

Odumosu said the command would not tolerate actions that threaten public safety or damage the corps’ reputation.

The commandant reminded personnel that their primary responsibility is to protect lives and critical national infrastructure.

He warned officers against using firearms to intimidate, harass or threaten civilians.

Odumosu stressed that personnel must follow operational guidelines when handling weapons. He also said officers should use firearms only when necessary and in line with established rules.

He urged personnel to uphold ethical standards and respect the communities they serve.

The FCT commandant reaffirmed his commitment to improving discipline and service delivery across the command.

He encouraged officers from various divisions, departments and units to benefit from the psychological evaluation programme.

The warning comes amid growing concerns about the conduct of security personnel in Nigeria.

The NSCDC says it will continue to enforce professional standards and hold officers accountable for misconduct.
