The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to learn from the United States midterm elections by using their votes to reject the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

The party called on Nigerians to hold the Tinubu-led administration accountable for what it described as poor leadership, unpopular economic policies, worsening insecurity and declining economic opportunities.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the outcome of the US elections demonstrated that political power ultimately rests with citizens through their votes.

The party argued that American voters had demonstrated that no political party or elected leader was entitled to remain in power indefinitely.

“Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent licence to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability,” the statement read.

The ADC maintained that elections should be determined by citizens’ welfare rather than sentiments, political loyalties or personality cults.

It further criticised the APC-led administration, accusing it of presiding over economic hardship and insecurity while seeking another mandate from Nigerians.

“We cannot continue to complain about the cost of living while voting for a President who has made life unaffordable. We cannot demand security while rewarding failure. We cannot earnestly yearn for change while sustaining the very political system responsible for our collective impoverishment,” the party stated.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the ADC urged Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process and use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to demand political change.

The party described the coming election as an opportunity for citizens to determine the country’s political direction through the ballot box.

Abdullahi also reiterated the party’s commitment to providing an alternative to the APC-led government, outlining its proposed agenda under the slogans: “Make Nigeria Affordable Again. Make Nigeria Safe Again. Give Nigerians Jobs Again.”

The ADC added that Nigerians could replicate the political choices of American voters by using their votes to demand better governance in 2027.
