The Super Falcons of Nigeria have kept their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualification hopes alive after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia in Rabat.
Nigeria needed a strong response after their opening result, and they delivered with a disciplined performance against a tough Zambian side.
Asisat Oshoala scored the only goal of the match in the 8th minute, giving the Super Falcons an early advantage.
However, the victory was far from easy. Nigeria were reduced to 10 players after Blessing Demehin received a red card, forcing the Super Falcons to defend for the entire second half with a numerical disadvantage.
Despite the pressure from Zambia, Nigeria showed their experience and determination to protect their lead and secure a crucial three points.
The result keeps Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages of WAFCON alive.
The defending champions will now face Egypt in their final group match, knowing a positive result will be important in their push for qualification.
Egypt are yet to record a victory in the tournament, but the Super Falcons will be aware that every match carries pressure as they aim to continue their title defence.
With their backs against the wall, the Nigeria side have once again shown the resilience that has made them the most successful team in African women’s football history.
