Team Nigeria continues to make its mark at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with athletes delivering historic performances and adding more medals to the country’s growing tally.
Following today’s events, Team Nigeria’s medal haul has now increased to 21 medals, comprising of 10 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze.
The latest successes came after a strong showing in athletics, where Nigerian stars produced memorable moments on the track and in the field.
Ogazi, Nathaniel Lead Nigeria’s Historic Gold Rush
The biggest highlight came from Samuel Ogazi, who became the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games men’s 400m title.
Ogazi produced a brilliant run to clock 44.25 seconds, pulling away from Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards in the final stages of the race. Richards claimed silver, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene took bronze.
The Nigerian’s winning time was just 0.01 seconds away from the Commonwealth Games record set by Grenada’s Kirani James in 2014.
Nigeria’s golden moments continued through Ezekiel Nathaniel, who made more history in the men’s 400m hurdles.
Nathaniel stormed to victory in 48.47 seconds to become Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games champion in the event, finishing ahead of England’s Jake Minshull and Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson.
Onojuvwevwo and Usoro Add More Medals
Nigeria also celebrated podium finishes from Ella Onojuvwevwo and Ruth Usoro.
Onojuvwevwo claimed bronze in the women’s 400m final after clocking 51.00 seconds.
Her performance made her the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event since Fatima Yusuf’s silver in 1994, ending a 32-year wait for the country.
The medal also marked her first individual senior medal for Nigeria.
In the field events, Ruth Usoro secured silver in the women’s long jump.
Usoro jumped 6.87 metres on her first attempt to finish behind England’s Jazmin Sawyers, who won gold with 6.93 metres.
The result was a major improvement from Usoro’s sixth-place finish at the previous Commonwealth Games.
Relay Teams Deliver More Podium Finishes
Team Nigeria also enjoyed success in the relay events.
The men’s 4x100m relay team of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike claimed bronze after a dramatic change in the medal standings.
Nigeria initially moved to silver following Canada’s disqualification, but Canada later won its appeal, restoring them to second place and moving Nigeria back to bronze.
The decision meant Ghana missed out on a medal in the event.
Nigeria ended its athletics action with another podium finish in the mixed 4x400m relay.
The team of Ezekiel Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George, Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo ran a Season’s Best of 3:12.85 to win bronze behind Jamaica and England.
Nigeria’s Medal Hunt Continues In Glasgow
With more events still to come at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria’s campaign is far from over.
The athletes have already delivered historic victories and memorable performances, but the search for more medals continues as the Games move towards their final stages.
