The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YBSIEC) has officially scheduled Saturday, June 6, 2026 for the conduct of local government elections across all 17 local government areas in the state.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Damaturu by Mohammed Nguru, Permanent Member I of the electoral commission, during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by security officials, leaders of political parties under the Inter‑Party Advisory Council, and members of the press.

Nguru said the election timetable has the approval of Governor Mai Mala Buni and is designed to deepen democratic governance at the grassroots.

He stressed the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, saying a credible poll requires the involvement of security agencies, political parties and the media. Nguru also noted that comprehensive guidelines outlining all procedures, timelines and requirements will soon be issued to political parties.

The commission urged parties to present candidates of integrity and substance, highlighting the crucial role local government leadership plays in service delivery and community development.

Eligibility conditions outlined for aspirants require chairmanship candidates to be at least 30 years old, while councillorship candidates must be 25 or older. All candidates must be bona fide residents of their communities, of sound mind, not bankrupt and possess at least a school certificate or equivalent. Mandatory security screening will also be conducted.

Nomination fees were fixed at ₦300,000 for chairmanship, ₦250,000 for vice‑chairmanship, and ₦200,000 for councillorship positions.

Nguru assured that the YBSIEC will oversee a free, fair, credible and peaceful election, and appealed to stakeholders to support the process while encouraging qualified citizens to participate actively.
