The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified its voter education efforts ahead of the 2027 General Elections by taking its sensitisation campaign to the streets through active participation in the Calabar Carnival 2025.

INEC officials and volunteers engaged thousands of carnival attendees with real-time demonstrations of the voter registration process, including verification, data capture and printing of temporary voter cards.

A mock registration point was set up with full working equipment to simulate the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise scheduled to resume on 5 January 2026.

The Commission said the initiative was designed to promote early awareness, increase voter literacy and encourage citizens to update their voter information before the polls.

Officials also distributed educational materials and answered enquiries on voter registration procedures, collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and general electoral participation.

According to the Commission, the street campaign is part of a broader electoral awareness strategy aimed at boosting public confidence and improving turnout in the 2027 elections. INEC described the Calabar Carnival outreach as a model for alternative voter education, merging civic responsibility with cultural engagement to reach Nigerians in informal spaces.

INEC said similar activities are expected to take place across other major public events and festivals, reinforcing the message that credible elections begin with informed voter participation.
