The House of Representatives has rejected a proposal to criminalise the inducement of voters during party primaries.

The decision was taken on Thursday during clause-by-clause consideration of a report seeking amendments to the Electoral Act 2022.

The rejected clause proposed a two-year jail term, without an option of fine, for anyone found guilty of financially inducing delegates to influence the outcome of party primaries.

Lawmakers voted against the provision, effectively removing it from the amendment process.
