Guinea-Bissau Honours Kano Governor with Highest National Medal

President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau has conferred the country’s highest national honour, the Gold Medal of the Republic, on Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, in recognition of his contribution to African unity through education and empowerment.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the award was presented on behalf of President Embaló by Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Defence, Mr. Donisio Cabi, during a ceremony held at the Kano Government House.

Speaking during the 33rd Executive Council meeting on Saturday, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to President Embaló and the people of Guinea-Bissau for the honour, pledging continued commitment to fostering educational cooperation and African solidarity.

Mr. Cabi, while delivering the President’s message, described Governor Yusuf as a Pan-Africanist whose gesture of offering 50 scholarships to students from Guinea-Bissau represents “a ray of hope for the youth of our country.”

He commended the Governor’s decision to extend educational opportunities beyond Nigeria’s borders, describing it as an act of vision and true leadership aligned with the Kwankwasiyya philosophy of empowerment, justice, and shared prosperity.

The ceremony, attended by members of the Kano State Executive Council and dignitaries, marked a milestone in the strengthening of diplomatic and cultural relations between Kano State and Guinea-Bissau.
