A Kano State High Court has continued hearing the defence in the murder trial of Umar Auwalu, Isyaku Yakubu and Yakubu Dayyabu, with the first defendant telling the court that he alone was responsible for the killing of his uncle’s younger sister and her six children.
The proceedings took place before High Court No. 11 in Kano, presided over by Justice Nasiru Saminu.
While testifying in his defence, Umar Auwalu told the court that he single-handedly carried out the killings in the Ciranci area of Kano. He further claimed that a traditional healer gave him a perfume and instructed him to continue committing similar crimes he had allegedly carried out in the past.
The defendant also absolved his co-accused, Isyaku Yakubu Chobe and Yakubu Dayyabu, of any involvement in the incident.
According to Umar, he only mentioned their names after he was subjected to severe hardship following his arrest by the police.
During Wednesday’s proceedings, the prosecution team, led by Barrister Safiya Yalwati and Barrister Zaharaddeen Hamisu Kofar Mata, presented the investigating police officer, Corporal Aliyu Jamilu, as a witness.
The defence team also called its witnesses as part of its case before the court.
After hearing both sides, Justice Nasiru Saminu adjourned the matter until July 21 for the continuation of the trial.
The case stems from the alleged killing of a woman and her six children in the Ciranci area of Kano State, a tragedy that drew widespread public attention and is currently before the court for determination.
