The Paraguay government has condemned racist remarks made by Senator Celeste Amarilla against France captain Kylian Mbappé. It also made it clear that the comments do not reflect the country’s official position or the views of its people.
In a statement released on Monday, the government described the remarks as unacceptable. It said they go against the values of respect, equality and peaceful coexistence.
“The Government of the Republic of Paraguay deplores and rejects the statements made by Senator Celeste Amarilla, directed at the captain of the French national football team, Kylian Mbappé,” the statement said.
Officials added that Paraguay remains committed to protecting human dignity and promoting mutual respect.
Government says senator acted alone
The government stressed that Paraguay operates under the principle of separation of powers. Therefore, statements made by lawmakers are their own responsibility.
It said Amarilla’s comments were personal opinions. As a result, they should not be seen as the position of the Paraguayan government or its citizens.
The statement also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to human rights. In addition, it pledged to continue fighting racism, xenophobia, intolerance and every form of discrimination.
Paraguay expresses solidarity with France
Meanwhile, the government expressed solidarity with everyone affected by the senator’s comments.
It also reaffirmed Paraguay’s longstanding friendship with France. According to the statement, both countries share a history of cooperation and mutual understanding.
The government said it remains committed to strengthening those ties.
Social media posts trigger backlash
The controversy began after Amarilla posted several messages on X targeting Mbappé.
She claimed the France captain had not learned to write. She also made references to coconuts and chimpanzees. Furthermore, she described him as a “colonised Cameroonian” who was “resentful, newly rich, arrogant and ugly.”
The posts quickly sparked widespread criticism. Many football fans, public figures and anti-racism campaigners condemned the remarks.
Mbappé hits back
Mbappé later responded on his X account. He described Amarilla as a “despicable woman” who was “unworthy of your position.”
He also accused the senator of “brazen racism.” According to Mbappé, her comments shifted attention away from Paraguay’s World Cup campaign.
The dispute followed France’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 in Philadelphia.
After the final whistle, tensions continued on the pitch. Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill threw the ball at Mbappé during a heated exchange between the two players.
However, Paraguay’s government has now sought to calm the situation. It reiterated its opposition to racism and discrimination while reaffirming its respect for France and its commitment to equality.
