Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has thrown his support behind Governor Monday Okpebholo’s proposal to introduce the death penalty for kidnappers and bandits operating in the state.
Oshiomhole made the declaration on Saturday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Edo North Local Government election campaign flag-off in Auchi, where he said criminal elements would face severe consequences under the state government’s security measures.
“I stand here to completely endorse the declaration by the governor… So kidnappers and bandits will be punished by death through firing squad,” Oshiomhole said.
The former governor argued that the security situation in Edo had improved under Governor Okpebholo, saying that civil liberties had been restored and that only criminals had reasons to fear the government.
Oshiomhole also expressed support for the establishment of state police, describing it as a measure that would strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force in tackling insecurity.
Meanwhile, Governor Okpebholo attributed increased government spending on infrastructure projects to the removal of fuel subsidy, saying the policy had provided governors with more resources to execute development programmes.
He said the additional funds were being used for massive road construction, renovation of schools, and other infrastructure projects across Edo State.
The governor also urged APC supporters to work towards delivering 2.5 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election, while charging local government candidates to prioritise grassroots development.
Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, described the local government elections as an important step towards the 2027 general election, while APC Edo State Chairman Jarrett Tenebe urged council chairmen to collaborate with Governor Okpebholo to replicate the administration’s achievements at the local level.
