The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has postponed its governorship primary election earlier scheduled for Thursday.
The party announced that the exercise will now hold on Friday, May 22, 2026.
The postponement comes amid growing political consultations and consensus talks among governorship aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The postponement was confirmed in an official statement issued by the APC State Publicity Secretary, Abdulwaheed Babatunde.
According to the statement, party members and aspirants should take note of the new date.
“The APC Governorship Primary, earlier scheduled to hold today, Thursday, 21st May 2026, has been postponed,” the statement read.
“The new date for the Governorship Primary is now Friday, 22nd May 2026.”
The party did not provide an official reason for the sudden postponement.
However, Kwara APC Chairman, Sunday Fagbemi, confirmed that officials from the national secretariat directed the state chapter to shift the exercise.
“We don’t have details for the cancellation other than the fact that the team from the national office came and instructed that the election be held tomorrow,” Fagbemi told journalists.
The development immediately sparked political discussions within the state chapter of the party.
Hours before the postponement, eight governorship aspirants reportedly stepped down for Abdulfatai Seriki, who is widely believed to be Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s preferred successor.
The aspirants announced their support after a series of strategic meetings held on Wednesday evening.
Those who backed Seriki include Salako Oluwatoyin, Captain Ahmad Mahmoud, Wale Sulaiman, Mohammed Bio, Toyin Alabi, Aisha Patigi, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, and Speaker Yakubu Danladi.
The move is seen as an attempt to strengthen party unity and avoid internal divisions ahead of the election.
According to sources within the APC, discussions among aspirants focused on maintaining party cohesion and preserving the achievements of the AbdulRazaq administration.
Leaders at the meeting reportedly agreed to support a peaceful and consensus-driven process.
The stakeholders also pledged commitment to issue-based politics and internal harmony within the party.
Political observers believe more aspirants may still step down before the primary takes place.
The Kwara development comes as the APC continues governorship and legislative primaries across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.
In several northern states, the party has adopted consensus arrangements to reduce internal disputes.
In Katsina State, Governor Dikko Radda secured the APC ticket through a consensus process supported by party leaders.
Similarly, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal emerged as the party’s governorship candidate, while Kano Governor Abba Yusuf was recently cleared to seek a second term.
However, some APC primaries in states such as Kaduna, Kebbi, and Niger have reportedly faced protests and allegations of candidate imposition.
Political attention is now focused on Friday’s governorship primary in Kwara State.
Party members and observers are waiting to see whether the consensus movement around Abdulfatai Seriki will hold or if fresh political alignments will emerge before voting begins.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is currently serving his second term and will not be eligible to contest again in 2027.
