Chief Grace Atinuke Oyelude made history in 1957 when she became the first-ever Miss Nigeria, the pageant was organized by the Daily Times newspaper and started as a simple photo competition.

At the time, many young women across the country submitted their pictures for a chance to win. Grace Oyelude did not even know she had entered the contest at first because her brother secretly submitted her photograph.

After competing against nearly 200 contestants, she won the crown and quickly became famous across Nigeria. Her victory marked the beginning of a major beauty pageant that would later produce many well-known Nigerian queens.

Winning Miss Nigeria came with exciting rewards. Grace Oyelude received £200, several new dresses, and a trip to London.

Instead of focusing only on fame and public attention, she decided to use the opportunity to improve her future. She traveled to England to study nursing and worked hard to build a successful career in healthcare.

She later became a registered nurse, a certified midwife, and a respected hospital administrator. Many Nigerians admired her because she showed that beauty queens could also become educated and successful professionals.

Chief Grace Oyelude was born on November 16, 1931, in Kano, although her family comes from Isanlu. Over the years, she earned several respected traditional titles, including Iyaolu of Isaluland and Iyalode of Okunland.

Even many decades after her historic victory, people still celebrate her contributions to Nigerian society. She remains one of the most respected women connected to the Miss Nigeria pageant.
