The University of Abuja is facing a growing accommodation crisis as student numbers continue to rise faster than available hostel spaces.

At its recent combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies, the university announced that over 12,000 undergraduate students graduated across two academic sessions. This figure reflects the institution’s rapid expansion.

However, this growth has put pressure on existing facilities. The university does not have enough hostels to meet current demand.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, said the institution is working to improve infrastructure.

He pointed to ongoing projects, including new research facilities and additional hostel construction. Despite these efforts, the gap remains wide. Many students still struggle to secure accommodation on campus.

The Governing Council has now called on private investors and corporate organizations to step in. It urged them to partner with the university to build more hostels.

The Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, stressed the importance of decent housing. He noted that good accommodation supports both student welfare and academic performance.

The situation at UNIABUJA reflects a wider problem across Nigeria. Many universities face similar shortages due to rising enrolment and limited infrastructure.

As a result, students often turn to off-campus housing. These options can be expensive, overcrowded, or unsafe.

UNIABUJA’s leadership believes its location in Abuja can attract investors. It hopes partnerships will help solve the housing shortage.

For now, many students continue to compete for limited hostel spaces. The need for urgent investment remains clear.
