U.S. President Donald Trump has said that China has assured him it will not supply weapons to Iran, a statement that comes as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain high.
According to Trump, he personally reached out to Chinese leader Xi Jinping over concerns that Beijing could be preparing to send military support to Tehran. In response, Trump said Xi denied any such plans and insisted China is not arming Iran.
Trump further claimed that China has now agreed to avoid supplying weapons altogether, presenting the development as a diplomatic success amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The remarks come against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the region, including a U.S. naval blockade targeting Iranian ports and disruptions around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Despite Trump’s assertions, Beijing has previously denied allegations that it was planning to send arms to Iran, dismissing such claims as unfounded.
Trump also suggested that U.S., China relations are improving, hinting at a potential meeting with Xi in the near future. He portrayed the reported agreement as a sign of cooperation between the two global powers, even as broader disagreements over the Middle East crisis persist.
While the claim could signal a diplomatic breakthrough, there has been no detailed public confirmation from Chinese officials that a formal agreement exists, leaving some uncertainty about the extent of the understanding between Washington and Beijing.
