The Federal Government has launched a nationwide digital learner tracking system and issued unique identification numbers to about 1.9 million students across Nigeria.

The initiative introduces the Learner Identification Number (LIN). It gives every student a permanent academic identity to improve education planning, monitoring, and data management.

The Federal Ministry of Education confirmed the rollout on Friday in a statement signed by spokesperson Folasade Boriowo.

It said the IDs have already been assigned to candidates writing the 2026 examinations by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO).

Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the LIN will strengthen examination integrity. It will also reduce impersonation and improve the accuracy of student records.

He explained that the system will track learners from primary to secondary school, even when they change schools.

The system will also help identify students who drop out before completing their education. This will support efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children.

The ministry said the LIN is linked to the Digitised National Education Management Information System.

This platform provides a verified national database of schools. Officials said the integration will improve data accuracy and support better policy decisions.

It will also help government allocate educational resources more efficiently.

The rollout currently covers about 1.9 million students. The government plans to expand it to all public and private schools.

Officials urged school administrators, parents, and stakeholders to support the initiative.

They described it as a major step toward a more efficient and data-driven education system.
