The Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria IBAN has called on Nyesom Wike to retract remarks perceived as threatening toward a journalist and issue a public apology.

The association also warned that it may direct its members to boycott the Minister’s press briefings.

IBAN’s position follows comments made by Wike during a live television interview, in which he inappropriately referenced a journalist’s interviewing style.

The journalist involved, Seun Okinbaloye, is a prominent media host.

IBAN stated that even hypothetical expressions of violence by public officials are unacceptable.

The body warned that such remarks could be interpreted as intimidation and may contribute to a hostile environment for journalists.

It also highlighted Nigeria’s ranking on global press freedom indices, noting that media professionals already face significant challenges.

The association referenced constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of expression and the role of the media.

IBAN stated that failure to comply could result in a boycott of the Minister’s media engagements by independent broadcast stations.

It said the move would be aimed at protecting journalists and upholding professional standards.

The association emphasised its preference for constructive engagement and expressed hope in prompt resolvation.
