INEC Chairman Rejects Bias Claims, Explains Decision

Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has denied allegations of bias raised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The response follows calls by the David Mark-led faction of the ADC for his resignation.

Amupitan stated that the Commission’s actions were guided strictly by legal interpretation.

He explained that INEC relied on the principle of status quo ante bellum.

According to him, the term refers to maintaining the situation as it existed before the dispute began.

He said the Commission carefully examined the circumstances before taking its decision.

Amupitan insisted that INEC did not take sides in the matter.

He maintained that the Commission remains committed to neutrality and adherence to the rule of law.

The dispute is linked to INEC’s derecognition of the ADC’s National Working Committee.

The development has heightened political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
