INEC Begins Review of Political Party Guidelines

The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun a three-day technical workshop to review its regulations for political parties.

The workshop is taking place in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

INEC said the meeting aims to align the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties with the Electoral Act 2026.

The workshop runs from March 4 to March 6, 2026.

Participants include national commissioners, resident electoral commissioners, directors, and development partners.

INEC Chairman Joash Ojo Amupitan said the review is necessary following new timelines introduced by the law.

Amupitan said the Commission plans to strengthen internal party governance.

According to him, the revised guidelines will introduce stricter rules for party membership documentation.

They will also strengthen financial transparency and promote inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom, Obo Effanga, described the retreat as timely.

National Commissioner Baba Bila said the review will examine implications of the Electoral Act 2026.

Director of Election and Party Monitoring Joan Arabs said the review will address operational challenges.

The INEC chairman urged political parties to strengthen internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

He said the reforms will help reduce pre-election litigation.

INEC said the revised regulations will guide party activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
