The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has deployed personnel across Abuja ahead of the February 21, 2026 Area Council elections.
The command also announced a restriction of movement throughout the Federal Capital Territory from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day, with exemptions for essential service providers and election officials.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the polls will cover 68 elective positions, including six area council chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship positions across the FCT’s six area councils.
INEC disclosed that about 1.68 million registered voters are eligible to participate in the elections.
In a statement, FCT Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said the deployment is being executed under a comprehensive operational order and involves collaboration with sister security agencies.
These include the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, directed officers to maintain professionalism and ensure adequate security at polling units and collation centres.
He also warned officers to remain impartial, vigilant, and respectful of citizens’ rights throughout the electoral process.
Residents have been urged to comply with security guidelines during the restriction period and cooperate with law enforcement personnel.
The police assured voters that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to enable them to exercise their civic duties peacefully and without fear.
