A fresh cholera outbreak is worsening in Borno State, with the disease spreading to Plateau State as health authorities intensify efforts to contain the growing public health threat.

The outbreak, which has affected several communities, has raised concerns among residents and health officials over the increasing number of suspected cases and the risk of further transmission.

In Borno, the situation has been linked to challenges including poor access to clean water, sanitation difficulties, and overcrowded living conditions in some affected areas. Health authorities are working to provide medical support, improve surveillance, and educate communities on preventive measures.

The spread to Plateau State has heightened concerns that the outbreak could extend to more locations if urgent measures are not sustained.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The disease can become deadly within hours if severe dehydration is not treated quickly.

Health experts have continued to advise residents to maintain proper hygiene, drink safe water, wash food items properly, and seek immediate medical attention when symptoms such as severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration occur.

Authorities have also urged communities to report suspected cases early to prevent further spread and reduce fatalities.

The latest outbreak comes amid recurring cholera challenges in parts of Nigeria, where factors such as flooding, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and limited access to clean water often contribute to the rise of infections.

Health officials are calling for increased cooperation from communities as response teams work to control the outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.
