A wave of AI-generated combat images featuring prominent northern digital voices has sparked debate online after Defence Minister challenged “social media people” to join troops on the frontlines to experience the realities of insecurity operations.
The satirical images show influencers and journalists, including and , dressed in military camouflage, tactical gear and helmets while carrying weapons in digitally created battlefield scenes.
Others featured in the viral AI campaign include Fadila H. Aliyu, Aminu Dahiru Ahmad, Aminu J Town, Comrd Danbaban Gawuna, Basheer Nafiu Uthman, Farida Usman Tofa, Muhd King Cash, Hafsat Ahmad Jingau, Auwalu Muhd Danlarabawa, Salma Gezawa and Ismail Nasiru Gwarzo.
The images emerged shortly after Gen. Musa said online commentators should experience the difficulties faced by troops battling insurgency, banditry and other security threats across Nigeria’s troubled regions.
“We will start taking social media people and join them with our soldiers to go to the battlefield in the North East, North West, and North Central regions, so they can see with their own eyes the kind of challenges and hardships our soldiers face on the battlefield,” the minister said.
He added that such exposure could help social media users better understand military operations and correct what he described as misconceptions about the armed forces’ efforts.
Hours after the statement circulated, several creators responded with humorous AI-generated portraits of themselves in combat settings, with captions such as “Reporting to Sambisa” and “Awaiting posting.”
The online trend has since triggered discussions about civil-military relations, digital activism and the growing influence of social media in shaping public conversations around insecurity.
While the Defence Ministry has not announced any formal plan to embed content creators with troops, the episode reflects a wider contest over how Nigeria’s security challenges are presented to the public and who gets to shape the narrative surrounding the battlefield.
