Nigeria’s House of Representatives has announced plans to reconvene for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to deliberate on issues arising from the recently released 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by House spokesperson Akin Rotimi, who disclosed that members were formally notified through an internal memorandum issued by the Office of the Speaker late Friday.

According to the statement, the development carries constitutional and national significance, necessitating urgent legislative attention.

The House said the emergency session underscores its commitment to responding swiftly to matters with far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic process.

Deliberations are expected to focus on legislative issues connected to INEC’s announcement, in line with the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly.

INEC had earlier announced that Presidential and National Assembly elections would be held on February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027. Party primaries were fixed between May 22 and June 20, 2026.

However, the February 20 date coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, raising concerns among some stakeholders about potential impacts on voter turnout and the performance of electoral officials observing the fast.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the commission to reconsider the date, citing its overlap with the fasting period.

In response, INEC, through its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna maintained that the timetable was developed in strict compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and existing electoral regulations.

The forthcoming emergency sitting is expected to examine the constitutional framework guiding election scheduling, as well as any potential legislative adjustments that may be required.

Observers say the deliberations could shape political preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly amid ongoing debates about inclusivity, religious considerations, and electoral logistics.

Further updates are anticipated following the House’s emergency session.
