The Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, has called for stronger collaboration among Nigeria’s traditional rulers. He said closer cooperation will help promote national unity, peace, security and the preservation of the country’s rich cultural heritage.

The monarch made the call during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, at the Zazzau Emir’s Palace in Zaria, Kaduna State. The visit highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two historic emirates and their shared commitment to national development.

Abubakar III, who also serves as the Chairman of the Gombe State Council of Emirs and Chiefs, said traditional institutions remain important partners in supporting government efforts at the grassroots. According to him, regular engagement among royal fathers can help address issues affecting national cohesion, security and community development.

He explained that the visit was another opportunity to strengthen the centuries-old relationship between the Zazzau and Gombe Emirates. The Emir described the relationship as one built on mutual respect, Islamic values and a shared commitment to peace.

“This visit is not the first,” the Gombe Emir said. “It is aimed at promoting the spirit of brotherhood, unity and solidarity among our emirates.”

The relationship between the two emirates dates back more than 200 years. Both institutions share deep historical and religious connections that began during the 19th-century Islamic reform movement led by Sheikh Usman dan Fodio. The Zazzau Emirate became part of the Sokoto Caliphate during the jihad, while the Gombe Emirate was established in 1809 by Buba Yero, one of Dan Fodio’s trusted lieutenants.

Over the years, both emirates have remained among the most respected traditional institutions in Northern Nigeria. Their rulers have continued to work together through regional and national traditional councils to encourage peaceful coexistence, cultural preservation and community development.

The Emir of Gombe said frequent consultations among traditional rulers are necessary, especially at a time when Nigeria faces security and socio-economic challenges. He noted that royal fathers play an important role in conflict resolution, public enlightenment and promoting peaceful relationships within their communities.

He also praised the leadership of the Emir of Zazzau and acknowledged the contributions of traditional institutions toward sustainable development. According to him, stronger partnerships among emirs will further strengthen peace and national integration.

In his response, the Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, welcomed the visit and described it as another sign of the enduring friendship between the two emirates. He said preserving these historical ties is important for strengthening dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation among traditional institutions.

Bamalli explained that the relationship between Zazzau and Gombe continues to reflect the values established during the Islamic reform movement, including good governance, scholarship, justice and peaceful coexistence. He stressed that these values remain relevant in addressing today’s national challenges.

The Emir reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, education, youth development and national unity. He also urged Nigerians to embrace tolerance, understanding and peaceful coexistence as the country works toward sustainable development.

The visit ended with special prayers for lasting peace, stability and prosperity in Kaduna State, Gombe State and Nigeria as a whole, reaffirming the commitment of both monarchs to fostering unity and strengthening collaboration among traditional institutions.
