Switzerland edge Colombia on penalties to book World Cup quarter-final

Switzerland secured a dramatic place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in Vancouver on Tuesday.

The tightly contested last-16 encounter ended 0-0 after 90 minutes and extra time, with both teams producing disciplined defensive displays. However, Switzerland held their nerve from the spot to book a quarter-final meeting with defending champions Argentina.

Kobel the hero in penalty shootout

Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as the match winner after producing a crucial save to deny Colombia’s Cucho Hernandez during the shootout.

Both sides missed penalties before Kobel’s outstanding stop handed Switzerland the advantage. Ruben Vargas then converted the decisive kick to seal a 4-3 victory and send the Swiss into the last eight.

Defences dominate in Vancouver

The match marked the final fixture of the 2026 World Cup to be played outside the United States, with thousands of Colombian supporters creating a lively atmosphere in Vancouver.

Colombia entered the game after conceding only one goal in four matches, while Switzerland also arrived with one of the tournament’s strongest defensive records.

The first clear opportunity came in the 21st minute when Kobel made a brilliant diving save to keep out Gustavo Puerta’s curling effort from outside the penalty area.

Switzerland responded after the first cooling break. Camilo Vargas first denied Fabian Rieder before producing another important save to stop Dan Ndoye.

Despite those chances, neither side could find the breakthrough before halftime.

Chances remain limited

Switzerland started the second half with greater urgency and enjoyed more possession, but Colombia continued to threaten on the counterattack.

Luis Suarez wasted one of Colombia’s best chances when he fired wide of goal, while star winger Luis Diaz found little space against Switzerland’s organized defense.

Both managers introduced several substitutes in search of a winner, but clear-cut opportunities remained rare.

In stoppage time, Dan Ndoye fired a dangerous effort across the face of goal, but no Swiss player managed to apply the finishing touch.

After 120 minutes failed to separate the teams, the match went to penalties, where Switzerland kept their composure to claim victory.

Argentina await in quarter-finals

The win sends Switzerland into the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face defending champions Argentina in one of the tournament’s most anticipated knockout matches.

Switzerland will now hope to carry their defensive resilience and shootout confidence into the clash as they continue their bid for a historic World Cup campaign.
