Nigeria have made history by qualifying for the Olympic Games in beach volleyball for the first time.

The Nigerian women’s team achieved the landmark feat on Saturday, August 22, defeating Morocco 2-0 in the final of the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Nations Championship in Egypt.

Nigeria won the opening set 21-18 before producing a dominant display in the second set, cruising to a 21-10 victory to complete a straight-sets win.

The triumph secured the African championship title and Nigeria’s place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, marking the country’s first-ever qualification for an Olympic beach volleyball event.

The Nigerian team showed composure throughout the final, particularly after a closely contested opening set. With the pressure of Olympic qualification hanging over the match, Nigeria stayed in control and pulled away decisively in the second set.

The historic achievement represents a significant breakthrough for beach volleyball in Nigeria, a sport that had never previously taken the country to the Olympic stage.

Nigeria has a strong history of Olympic participation across several sports, but beach volleyball had remained one of the disciplines yet to feature Nigerian athletes at the Games.

That changed in Egypt, as the Nigerian women delivered when it mattered most and secured their place in Olympic history.

The qualification is also expected to provide fresh momentum for beach volleyball in the country, potentially encouraging greater investment and creating more opportunities for young players to take up the sport.

For Nigeria, the journey now moves from the African championship to the world’s biggest sporting stage.

When the beach volleyball competition begins at Los Angeles 2028, Nigeria will be making its Olympic debut in the event.

A new chapter in Nigerian sporting history has officially begun.
