Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over a recent directive by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). He warned that Nigeria could be drifting away from democratic principles.

In a post on X, Obi described the development as troubling. He said actions that affect the media must be handled with care.

Obi said the media plays a key role in any democracy. He described it as the conscience of the nation.

He added that no government should see the press as an enemy. According to him, a free media supports transparency and accountability.

The NBC recently warned broadcast stations about ethical breaches. It cited cases where presenters present opinions as facts.

The commission also raised concerns about unbalanced reporting. It said stations must follow the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

In addition, NBC warned that violations could attract sanctions. This comes as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections.

Obi said the government should focus on major national challenges. He listed insecurity, economic hardship, and low public trust.

He argued that controlling media narratives will not solve these problems. Instead, he called for better governance and results.

Obi expressed support for media organisations across Nigeria. He said journalists must be allowed to work without fear.

He warned that pressure on the press could weaken democracy. He also stressed the need to protect free expression.

Obi concluded that Nigeria needs stronger institutions. He said building trust in public systems should be the priority.

According to him, real progress depends on openness, accountability, and respect for democratic values.
