Police probe Air Peace smoking incident

The Airport Police Command in Lagos says it will arraign two passengers for allegedly smoking and engaging in unruly conduct aboard an Air Peace flight from South Africa to Lagos.

The incident reportedly triggered the aircraft’s emergency smoke alarm and caused panic among passengers.

Police spokesperson ASP Mohammed Adeola disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, he identified the suspects as Enaruna Prince Aghama, 51, and Tony Ajayi, 43.

According to the police, the incident occurred at about 7:44 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026, while the aircraft was flying to Lagos.

Investigators said the two passengers lit and smoked cigarettes inside the aircraft. Their actions activated the plane’s smoke detection and emergency alarm system. The alarm caused anxiety among passengers and cabin crew.

After the aircraft landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Aviation Security personnel handed the suspects over to the International Airport Police Division for investigation.

Police said investigators also found that the suspects had an alcoholic beverage during the flight.

According to the statement, the pair became uncooperative and verbally aggressive when cabin crew members tried to enforce safety procedures. Police said their conduct further disrupted the orderly operation of the flight.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, described the alleged actions as unacceptable.

“Any act capable of compromising aviation safety or disrupting the orderly operation of an aircraft is unacceptable,” she said.

Olufunke said the command remains committed to enforcing aviation security laws. She added that officers will continue to protect passengers, crew members, and other airport users.

‘The commissioner also urged travellers to obey lawful instructions from airline operators and aviation personnel. She stressed that discipline and orderly conduct are essential for safe air travel.

Police said they will arraign the two suspects before a court of competent jurisdiction after concluding their investigation.
