A coalition of indigenous youth groups in Plateau State has urged the Federal Government to deploy more Department of State Services (DSS) operatives to communities facing repeated attacks. The groups said intelligence-led operations can help stop the renewed killings and restore peace.
The coalition includes the Afizere, Anaguta, Atakar, Aten, Berom, Irigwe, Kulere, Mushere, Mwaghavul, Pan and Ron youth associations. Speaking in Jos, the coalition’s spokesman, Dalyop Mwantiri, said attackers killed at least 50 people within the past week. He said the attacks took place in Riyom and Bassa Local Government Areas. He also said thousands of residents had fled their homes.
Mwantiri called on security agencies to arrest and prosecute those behind the attacks. He said victims deserve justice and better protection. He added that the DSS deployment to Barkin Ladi in May 2026 brought relief to many communities. According to him, intelligence gathering and quick action reduced attacks and gave residents hope.
The coalition asked the Federal Government to extend the same security strategy to Riyom, Bokkos, Mangu, Bassa, Jos South, Kanam and Quan Pan. It said the Barkin Ladi model proved that intelligence-led operations can improve security in troubled areas.
The youth groups also rejected earlier allegations against DSS personnel. They said they found no credible evidence to support the claims. The coalition urged security agencies to remain focused on protecting lives and preventing more attacks.
The coalition described the condition of displaced persons as very difficult. It noted that many victims have not returned home despite the construction of housing units in Bokkos. The group also supported the creation of state police. It urged the National Assembly to pass the bill quickly. It also asked President Bola Tinubu to sign it into law. The coalition recommended that traditional rulers help screen recruits to keep criminals out of the proposed force.
