Nigeria is celebrating another academic milestone after two students won gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy.
Chimdiebube Onwubiko, a JSS3 student at Evergreen Schools in Enugu State, won gold in the Mathematics category for Grades 9, 10 and 11.
The competition, held from 2 to 8 July, brought together some of the brightest young minds from more than 150 countries.
Another Nigerian student, 17-year-old Don-Anele Munachimso from Owerri, Imo State, also claimed gold in the same category, giving Team Nigeria an outstanding double victory.
Both students qualified for the international competition after emerging as top performers in a regional STEM contest sponsored by education advocate Alex Onyia. His initiative supports talented Nigerian students by giving them opportunities to compete on the global stage.
Their success has attracted praise from across the country. Many Nigerians have described the achievement as proof that the country’s young people can compete with the very best when given the right support and opportunities.
To celebrate the feat, a hero’s welcome has been planned for the students in Imo State on 10 July. Family members, teachers, supporters and well-wishers are expected to honour their remarkable performance.
Their victory also reflects the growing interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education across Nigeria. Schools in states such as Ogun have also recorded impressive results in recent international competitions, showing that more Nigerian students are making their mark on the world stage.
The achievements of Onwubiko and Munachimso are expected to inspire more young Nigerians to pursue excellence in mathematics, science and technology while proving that hard work and determination can open doors to global success.
