Welsh music icon Bonnie Tyler, best known for the global hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died at the age of 75, marking the end of a decades long career that made her one of the most recognizable voices in pop rock music.
Tyler’s family and team confirmed her death, describing it as unexpected and asking for privacy. The singer died on July 8, 2026, while receiving treatment in Portugal infact, reports said she had faced serious health complications after emergency intestinal surgery.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, in 1951, Tyler rose from performing in local clubs to becoming an international music star. Her distinctive raspy voice became her trademark and helped separate her from other performers of her era.
She gained early success in the late 1970s with songs including “It’s a Heartache,” which became a worldwide hit, however, her biggest breakthrough came in 1983 when she released “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” written by songwriter Jim Steinman. The dramatic ballad topped charts around the world and became one of the defining songs of the 1980s.
Following the success of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Tyler continued her international success with “Holding Out for a Hero,” which became another fan favourite and gained renewed popularity through film and television appearances.
Throughout her career, Tyler released numerous albums, performed across the world and remained a popular figure, particularly in Europe. She also represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest and received an MBE in 2022 for her contribution to music.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fans and fellow entertainers who celebrated Tyler’s powerful vocals and lasting influence on popular music. Actor Kevin Bacon, whose film Footloose featured Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero,” praised her as one of rock’s great voices.
Tyler’s career spanned more than five decades, and her songs continue to attract new listeners across generations. Her signature voice and emotional performances have secured her place among music’s most memorable artists.
