Emmanuel Nnorom is preparing to take over as Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), succeeding Tony Elumelu after decades of distinguished service in banking and corporate leadership.

With more than 40 years of experience, Emmanuel Nnorom brings deep industry knowledge and a strong record of leading some of Nigeria’s biggest financial institutions and businesses.

Although some Nigerians are only now learning about Emmanuel Nnorom, he is no stranger to UBA.

Before joining the bank’s Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024, he spent more than eight years in executive management. During that period, he held several strategic positions.

They included Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director for Finance, Executive Director for Risk, Executive Director of the Group Executive Office and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.

Those roles gave him a deep understanding of UBA’s operations, governance and long-term strategy.

Driving UBA’s Expansion Across Africa

Nnorom played a key role in strengthening UBA’s pan-African footprint.

As Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa in 2013, he supervised the bank’s operations in several African countries. His work helped expand UBA’s presence beyond Nigeria and strengthened its position as one of Africa’s leading financial institutions.

That experience also exposed him to cross-border banking, regional regulations and international business management. These are skills many analysts believe will benefit him as chairman.

Leadership Beyond Banking

Nnorom’s experience extends well beyond the financial sector.

Since 2017, he has served as Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings. The investment company has interests in financial services, healthcare, hospitality, power, real estate, energy and technology.

Before returning to Heirs Holdings, he led Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp) as President and Chief Executive Officer. During his tenure, he oversaw businesses in power generation, hospitality, agriculture and energy.

These leadership roles have earned him recognition as one of Nigeria’s most experienced corporate executives.

More Than Four Decades of Experience

Nnorom’s career spans more than 40 years.

He has worked at Standard Trust Bank, Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank. Across these institutions, he built expertise in finance, operations, planning, risk management, information technology, regulatory affairs and human resources.

His professional credentials also reflect that experience. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN). He also completed executive leadership programmes at Templeton College, Oxford.

Succeeding Tony Elumelu

Replacing Tony Elumelu will not be an easy task.

During his time as Chairman, Elumelu helped transform UBA into one of Africa’s leading financial institutions. Today, the bank operates in more than 20 African countries and maintains offices in Europe, the Middle East and the United States.

Nnorom will inherit a bank with an expanding international presence, ambitious digital banking plans and millions of customers. His immediate challenge will be maintaining that momentum while responding to rapid technological change and growing competition.

What His Appointment Means

Leadership transitions often shape the future direction of major organisations.

Many analysts, however, believe Nnorom’s appointment signals continuity rather than disruption. Having served in both executive and board positions, he understands UBA’s culture, strategy and long-term goals.

His extensive experience in banking, investment management and corporate governance positions him to guide the institution through its next stage of growth.

Looking Ahead

When Emmanuel Nnorom officially assumes office on August 21, 2026, he will become the new face of UBA’s boardroom.

His appointment represents more than a leadership change. It marks the beginning of another chapter in UBA’s history.

For shareholders, employees and customers, the transition reflects the bank’s commitment to experienced leadership. It also signals confidence in a man whose career has been defined by steady growth, strategic thinking and decades of corporate excellence.
