The Lagos State Government has launched a new school feeding initiative that will provide daily nutritious snacks to 30,000 pupils in public primary schools across the state.
The programme aims to reduce classroom hunger, improve learning outcomes and increase school attendance. It is being implemented in partnership with the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme.
Officials unveiled the initiative, tagged “Adopt A School for Snacks for Thought – PBAT FEEDS!”, on Wednesday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
A pilot phase will run from 30 June to 2 July. During the exercise, selected pupils will receive healthy snacks and beverages every school day.
The government said many children struggle to learn because they attend school without adequate nutrition.
National Programme Manager of the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, Aderemi Adebowale, said hunger continues to affect pupils’ academic performance.
“A hungry child struggles to learn, and a child who struggles to learn is less likely to reach his or her full potential,” she said.
She explained that poor nutrition weakens concentration, memory, classroom participation and cognitive development. It also contributes to absenteeism and poor academic performance.
According to Adebowale, the programme supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Federal Government’s human capital development goals.
“Our vision is to build a Nigeria where no child is prevented from learning because of hunger. Nutrition is an investment in human capital and national productivity,” she added.
The launch also featured a digital dashboard that will improve transparency and accountability.
The platform allows sponsors to identify schools, access enrolment data and make sponsorship commitments online.
It also enables real-time monitoring of programme implementation.
Adebowale said the dashboard marks a shift from traditional donations to measurable social impact.
