Konaté Reveals Personal Tragedies Behind Difficult Liverpool Season

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has revealed that a series of personal tragedies affected his performances during the 2025–26 campaign, describing the season as one of the toughest periods of his life.

The French international remained a regular starter for Liverpool, making 51 appearances across all competitions, including 49 starts. However, despite his importance to the team, Konaté acknowledged that he struggled at times to maintain the high standards he had previously set.

Liverpool endured a disappointing season, finishing fifth in the Premier League and missing out on a top-four spot. While the club faced challenges on the pitch, Konaté was also dealing with emotional difficulties away from football.

Speaking about the difficult period, the 27-cap France defender explained that multiple personal losses left him emotionally exhausted.

“All of these tragic events happened so quickly and as soon as I felt like I was getting my head above water, something else happened,” Konaté said.

Despite the setbacks, the defender praised the support he received from Liverpool supporters, teammates and his family, while stressing the importance of finding inner strength to continue performing for the team.

“I had the support of all these fans, who are exceptional at Liverpool, my team-mates and especially my family, but I also had to learn how to get back on my feet on my own because the team needed me more than ever and I know that my father would have wanted me to get back,” he added.

Konaté remains a key member of Liverpool’s defence and continues to feature prominently for the France national team under coach Didier Deschamps. He is expected to play an important role as France prepare for the upcoming World Cup.

His comments offer a rare insight into the personal challenges professional footballers often face behind the scenes, even while competing at the highest level of the game.
