Omar Advocates Cannabis Reform, Free School Meals

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has highlighted key legislative efforts she worked on during a busy week in Washington, focusing on cannabis reform, free school meals, worker protections, student loans, and recognition of public service.

Omar, who serves as co-chair of the Cannabis Caucus, joined a press conference urging Congress to legalize marijuana nationwide and create what she described as a “rational, just, and humane” cannabis policy. She said the proposed reforms would help build a system based on fairness and economic opportunity rather than benefiting only wealthy and well-connected individuals.

The Minnesota lawmaker also announced the reintroduction of the Universal School Meals Program Act alongside Senator Bernie Sanders. The bill seeks to provide students with free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks throughout the year.

On labor and workplace safety, Omar said she emphasized the importance of fully funding worker protection agencies such as OSHA and NIOSH. Speaking in her role as Ranking Member of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee, she stressed the need to identify workplace safety and health risks before they harm workers.

Omar also questioned Education Secretary Linda McMahon over plans to cap public student loans for degrees including nursing, teaching, and social work. According to Omar, such caps could make higher education less accessible and more expensive for students pursuing critical professions.

In addition, the congresswoman delivered remarks on the House Floor honoring Minnesota State Representative Erin Koegel for her decade of service to communities including Fridley, Columbia Heights, Spring Lake Park, and Hilltop in the Minnesota legislature.
