The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCMS), Yakubu Gowon University formerly known as University of Abuja, has successfully conducted its first student association election, the exercise marked the beginning of student-led governance in the newly established faculty.
The Faculty Association Electoral Committee (FAEC) organized the election, introduced both physical and electronic voting to increase participation.
The electronic voting system allowed 300-level students on SIWES and Industrial Training to vote remotely. This approach ensured that eligible students could participate regardless of their location.
The use of e-voting made the election more inclusive. It also helped students outside the campus exercise their voting rights.
Strong Turnout Despite Slow Start
Voting began slowly in the morning. However, turnout increased as the day progressed.
Students queued in large numbers to cast their votes. Their participation showed strong support for democratic processes within the faculty.
The election remained peaceful throughout the exercise. Officials conducted the process transparently and counted votes openly after voting ended.
Winners Emerge After Vote Collation
After counting both physical and electronic votes, FAEC announced the results.
Oladoja Afix won the presidential election with 277 votes. Shukrah Oniye secured the vice-presidential position with 244 votes.
Rejoice emerged as Director of Social after receiving 314 votes. Chinenye Agatha won the Director of Welfare position with 228 votes.
Candidates who contested unopposed were confirmed through a “Yes” vote by students.
FAEC Commends Stakeholders
The Electoral Committee praised students, faculty management, security personnel, volunteers, and other stakeholders for supporting the exercise.
FAEC described the election as free, fair, and credible. The committee said the successful exercise proves that democratic values can thrive among young people at the faculty level.
