Former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned against accepting unverified credentials in leadership.
Obi said Nigeria must protect standards and accountability. He made the comment in a statement on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The statement was titled, “By making excuses for unverified certificates, we are planting poison in the soul of our society.”
Obi said Nigerians should not treat academic credentials as a political issue. He said the matter is about standards and accountability.
The former governor warned against accepting questionable or missing credentials. He said political loyalty should not influence the verification process.
According to Obi, the way people enter leadership matters. He said Nigerians must also examine the qualifications of those seeking public office.
Obi warned that ignoring credential verification could create serious problems in the future.
He said Nigeria could one day have professionals who lack the required academic background.
He mentioned professors, doctors and judges as examples. Obi said such a situation could weaken public trust and national institutions.
He urged Nigerians to reject the normalisation of unverified credentials in leadership.
The NDC presidential candidate called for equal standards in Nigerian society.
He said accountability should apply to everyone. He also urged Nigerians to put truth above political interests.
Obi said citizens should defend principles instead of protecting individuals because of political loyalty.
Obi’s comments followed the release of the names and credentials of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The development has renewed attention on the qualifications and credentials of political candidates ahead of the election.
Obi said Nigeria must choose standards over political convenience. He also stressed the need to protect accountability for future generations.
