A fire outbreak has destroyed more than 76 temporary shelters belonging to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ngamma village, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, Northeast Nigeria.

The affected IDPs are predominantly migrants from Borno State who have been taking refuge in the host community after fleeing insurgency-related violence.

Following the incident, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), acting on the directive of the State Governor Mai Mala Buni, promptly visited the scene to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the damage.

Preliminary findings revealed that one person was hospitalised as a result of the fire, while one household was completely burnt.

The inferno also destroyed livestock and several bags of foodstuffs, worsening the humanitarian situation of the displaced families, who were already living in vulnerable conditions.

Eyewitnesses and affected victims recounted their losses amid tears and appealed to government authorities and humanitarian organisations for urgent relief and support.

The cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined.
