President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian scholar and sustainability expert, Professor Ademola Adenle, for winning the inaugural World Academy of Sciences–M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace, describing his achievement as a source of national pride.

President Tinubu received Professor Adenle at the State House on Monday, alongside the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari (CON).

He commended the academic for his groundbreaking work in agricultural innovation, renewable energy, biosciences, and public health — fields the President said are central to Nigeria’s development priorities.

Professor Adenle made history as the first-ever recipient of the prestigious global honour, which was presented by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 7, 2025, during the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi.

The award, regarded as a “mini Nobel Peace Prize,” was established by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in memory of the late Professor M.S. Swaminathan, the pioneer of India’s Green Revolution.

It recognises outstanding individuals from developing countries who have made transformative contributions to food security, sustainable agriculture, and peacebuilding.

Professor Adenle, who currently serves as Senior Special Adviser on Agricultural Innovation at Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, was honoured for his work promoting food security, climate justice, and empowerment of vulnerable communities.

He announced plans to launch the Women in Biosciences Initiative, a programme aimed at improving rural agricultural productivity through training, entrepreneurship, and renewable energy adoption.

The initiative, to be implemented in collaboration with the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, will also address malnutrition and waterborne diseases across Africa and Asia.

At the award ceremony in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi described Professor Adenle as “a beacon of hope” whose work exemplifies the link between science, sustainability, and peace.
