The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, has been honoured by the Federal University of Lokoja for his dedication, hard work, and contributions to public service and legal education.

The recognition was presented during the 56th Annual National Conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT), held in Lokoja.

While receiving the award, Professor Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to credible, free, and fair elections across the country. He disclosed plans to work closely with the National Assembly to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral framework through ongoing legislative reforms.

“With the Electoral Act currently under amendment, we must ensure that the law reflects lessons learned from past elections and establishes a process all Nigerians can be proud of,” he said.

The INEC Chairman, who described law as “the foundation upon which societies build their progress,” emphasized the centrality of legal frameworks in promoting credible elections and democratic governance.

He also expressed optimism that the proposed reforms would help reduce post-election disputes. “Let us aim for a time when electoral petitions no longer crowd our courts,” he said.

Professor Amupitan called on the academic community to support efforts aimed at deepening Nigeria’s democracy through research, advocacy, and civic education.

The award, presented by the Federal University of Lokoja, capped a session in which the INEC Chairman was commended for his dedication to advancing electoral integrity and legal scholarship in Nigeria.
