Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has declared that he will no longer participate in public protests unless they attract massive citizen turnout, citing concerns over safety and what he described as the hypocrisy of online supporters.

In a statement released on his verified social media handle, Adeyanju said he would not take part in any protest that fails to mobilize at least one million participants, noting that Nigerians often show support online but abandon activists when real danger arises.

“Any protest that one million people are not coming out, I will not join. Nigerians will deceive you online with retweets and leave you alone with bullets on the street,” he wrote.

He lamented that activists who risk their lives are often mocked or accused of seeking attention after facing arrest or injury.

“They will then turn around to mock you and say you were only chasing clout or working for the government you oppose,” he added.

Adeyanju stated that while he will no longer take part in street demonstrations, he remains committed to supporting protesters through financial contributions or legal aid.

“The era of putting my life in danger is over. I wish Sowore and others well. The only thing I can offer those arrested or wounded in any protest is financial support or legal services,” he said.

The activist’s remarks have since sparked mixed reactions, with some sympathizing with his stance and others accusing him of abandoning activism amid growing public disillusionment.
